Success Stories

"Owen" -- adopted July 2009

Owen is a smooth coat Border Collie male who came from a shelter in the Denver area just before Christmas extremely underweight and with a nasty bout of kennel cough. He is now a healthy 40 pounds and full of all the life and exuberance an 11 month old pup should have -- Owen has the spunk of the Energizer Bunny with the ears to match!!! While always ready to run, Owen does have a great off switch in the house, and will chill out with a bone or find a cozy spot to curl up. Quite the little lovebug, Owen will divebomb under your arm or climb on your head for some affection and has perfected the “puppy eyes” look for added effect! Owen loves people and knows how to work a room to get his ears scratched as much as possible.

Owen was recently put on sheep to test his herding instinct and performed magnificently! He has great natural ability and drive (and is more than happy to get a mouthful of wool!). In addition to sheep, Owen loves chasing tennis balls, other dogs and occasionally herding smaller dogs. Because of his drive & that BC intensity, Owen would do best in an experienced BC home that will provide him an outlet for his energy & talents such as herding, agility or flyball. While he knows basic commands, Owen could benefit from a formal obedience class as his recall is great when he is in the mood for it, but sometimes other dogs are just more interesting! When it comes to other dogs, Owen loves to play & his favorite activity with the male BC in his foster home is a great wrestling match!! They get a bit rough at times but always know when to quit.

Owen freely sleeps in his open kennel all night, is completely housebroken and rides famously in the car. If left alone uncrated, Owen can be a bit destructive, so pillows and blankets beware! Owen is a bit of a hoarder of toys and chews and while he may growl a bit on occasion, he is not overly protective of them and will share. Owen also tends to be a bit reactive to other people, dogs or cars while walking and may lunge or jump though there is not an aggressive bone in his body.

Despite the occasional bout of “puppy brain”, Owen is a wonderful dog, smart as a whip and full of personality! He is neutered, current on vaccinations and fostered in a loving home near Denver, CO.
